The initial data for the 3D model of the mold are the drawing of the molded part, the 3D model of the molded part and the technical specifications for it. In the technical conditions, the quality requirements of the castings (metal density, surface cleanliness, etc.), admission for dimensions, test conditions, control requirements for the acceptance of finished castings are specified. The mold is, in substance, not a simple negative of the detail that should be molded, it is a complex engineering object that requires certain skills in its development. The highly responsible task, which is solved in the process of casting technology development, is the development of the casting design with a purpose of checking its casting manufacturability. The design of the casting is considered as manufacturable only if it meets the requirements of the foundry and the technical conditions for its production.

The thickness of the walls is the most important parameter of the mold, which affects the character of the heat exchange between the melt poured into it and the emerging casting with the mold material, determines its solidity and economical efficiency
